Your GPU encoder is faster. It is not better.

The advice is to use NVENC and stop thinking about it. That works until bitrate gets tight, and then the thing you stopped thinking about is the problem.

Hardware encoders live on a fixed block of silicon. NVENC on NVIDIA, Quick Sync on Intel, VideoToolbox on Apple, VCN on AMD.

They are fast because they are fixed. That is also the limitation.

The trade

x264 runs on your CPU and can spend as long as you allow on each frame. It searches harder, tries more options, and packs more picture into the same bitrate.

A hardware block does a fixed amount of work per frame. It cannot spend more time to get a better result. It can only do what it was built to do.

At the same bitrate, a good software encode beats a hardware encode. The gap has narrowed a lot over the last few generations. It has not closed.

Where the gap shows

High motion at low bitrate. Grass, confetti, smoke, a moving camera at night. Give a hardware encoder 3500 kbps and a busy scene and you will watch it smear.

The part people skip

One GPU has a limited number of encode sessions and one encode block. Stream on it, record on it, and run a game capture, and they queue behind each other.

That shows up in OBS as skipped frames from encoding lag. The card is not out of graphics power. It is out of encoder.

Check which chip you have before you plan around it. Media engines differ between generations of the same brand, and the marketing name on the box does not tell you what is inside.
