A dynamic mic is not better. It just hears less of your room.
Everyone says get a dynamic. Nobody says why, so people buy one, put it two feet away, and wonder why it sounds worse than the condenser it replaced.
A condenser hears more. That is the whole difference that matters to you.
Whether that helps depends on your room. Nothing else.
What the two actually are
A dynamic microphone moves a coil in a magnetic field. That takes real energy. So it hears loud, close sound. It ignores quiet, distant sound.
A condenser uses a light diaphragm and a charge. It reacts to tiny pressure changes. That is why it captures detail. It is also why it captures your air conditioning.
In a treated room, a condenser sounds better. In an untreated room, a dynamic sounds better. The microphone did not change. The room did.
What people get wrong after buying one
A dynamic rejects the room by being deaf. That only works up close. At two feet you threw away the advantage and kept the drawback.
Sit within a hand span. Off to one side rather than straight on, so plosives miss the capsule. That is where the sound everyone is chasing comes from.
The gain problem nobody mentions
Deaf means you need more gain. Many dynamic microphones want 55 to 60 dB for speech. Cheap interfaces run out before that. Some get noisy at the top of their range.
- Check the preamp gain your interface offers before buying the microphone.
- An inline preamp adds 20 to 25 dB of clean gain where the interface falls short.
- A USB dynamic sidesteps this, because the preamp inside was chosen for that capsule.
Treating the room instead
Want to keep the condenser? Put soft material at the first reflection points. That means the walls either side of you. It also means the surface behind the microphone.
A duvet on a stand behind your screen does more than a foam tile. Bookshelves work. Curtains work. The bare wall behind you is the one that ruins the recording.
Test it by clapping once in the room. If you hear a ring after the clap, the microphone hears it during every sentence.
